I composed “Rhododendron” in the same week as “Hot Philouries”. It was early April and the wild rhododendron was in bloom everywhere in the forest near where I used to live near the Pacific coast around Caspar, California. Parts of it are hard for me to play. Young players of bowed instruments seem to have no difficulty at all, especially if they’ve had some classical training.
