LITTLE BLACK TRAIN

This was a well-known song in the first half of the 20th century. Recorded versions pull, by musical means, a variety of moods from what are mostly puritanical condemning words (ballroom dancing leads straight to hell, for instance).  I’ve made some adjustments to the words and music.

LITTLE BLACK TRAIN  (PD)

God sent to Hezeki', this message from on High
“You better set your house in order, for you must surely die.”
He turned to the wall and weeping, we see him there, in tears
He got his business fixed all right, God spared him 15 years

Chorus:
There's a little black train a-comin’, fix all your business right
There's a little black train a-comin’ and it may be here tonight

Ten thousand times  you’ve cheated, a million times you lied
You can’t cheat that little black train or beat this final ride
A little black train a comin’, comin’ down the track
You gotta ride that little black train but it ain’t gonna bring you back

Chorus:
There's a little black train a-comin’, fix all your business right
There's a little black train a-comin’, prepare to take a ride

A billion dollar fortune, a mansion glittering white;
You can't take it with you when the train moves in the night
With philanthropy and manners your greed you try to hide
You got to ride that little black train and make this final ride

Chorus:
There's a little black train a-comin’, fix all your business right
There's a little black train a-comin’ and it may be here tonight
