THE LOST GUIDE

The essence of this song is that actions have consequences. The words apply to all parties in the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict and to their supporters and detractors as well.  But I began making the song with a particular group in mind.

It seemed  to me —and still does —that Hamas chose as its October 7th victims people who had been working to achieve peace between factions in the Holy Land. This was no random attack on any Jew who happened to be near the border of Gaza. This was a statement of intent, of the wish for war. It was a calculated provocation to get Israel to attack Gaza, aligned with a cynical well-planned public relations program to get the world to condemn Israel for the inevitable death and suffering that would befall the residents of Gaza. I think Hamas manipulated Israeli leadership to slaughter so many thousands of people in Gaza. They were not hard to manipulate.  But to manipulate the minds of thousands of people around the world who believe they are committed to justice—that is a remarkable and tragic achievement.

The emergence on the American political left of enthusiastic, gleeful support for sadistic rape, torture, and murder left me stunned. Their support for the rape, torture, and murder of Israelis of the political left led me to a horrible conclusion: Either a portion of American leftists are suicidal and self-hating—or—it is Jewish people that they hate.  People like me.  According to their way of thinking it doesn’t matter that Hamas embodies the antithesis of progressive or liberal values; it doesn’t matter that Hamas leaders are not concerned with bettering the lives of Palestinians but rather with furthering the cause of Radical Islam while lining its own pockets. No. What they are celebrating is that in one day a gang of criminals not only rid the world of 1200 Jews but caused each of their victims extreme suffering before they died.

This song addresses these people, especially university professors and their poorly-informed, credulous students.  Do they really not know right from wrong? I think they do and that makes the situation worse.

Did you really think it won’t come back and bite you?
That what you’ve done is just a bit of play?
As ye sow so shall ye reap, can you really be so fast asleep?
As sure as the world is round it’s on its way

Can you really not tell right from wrong?
Can’t you tell the singer from the song?
Wake up friend open your eyes
You’ve been bamboozled, hypnotized
As sure as the world is round it’s on its way

Did you really think it won’t come back and bite you?
That what you’ve done is just a bit of play?
As ye sow so shall ye reap
Wake up friend, you’re sound asleep
As sure as the world is round  it’s on its way

You’ve got degrees, you’ve got ideals, you think you’re smart
Did you never educate your heart?
Cruel ideas have warped your head. Too late to wake up when you’re dead
As sure as the world is round it’s on its way

Are you a leading light or useful fool?
Did you never learn the Golden Rule?
Is your mind a storm or your heart at ease?
Did you make more friends or enemies?
As sure as the world is round  it’s on its way

Did you really think it won’t come back and bite you?
Do you think your deeds are just a bit of play?
As ye sow so shall ye reap, can you really be so fast asleep?
As sure as the world is round it’s on its way

As ye sow so shall ye reap, can you really be so fast asleep?
As sure as the world is round it’s on its way
What goes down will come around it’s on its way
